Johnny Cash (26 February 1932 – 12 September 2003) was an American singer, songwriter, musician, and actor. Known as "The Man in Black" for his trademark all-black attire, his music was influenced by his upbringing and exposure to rock and roll, rockabilly, blues, folk, gospel and country music.
Cash is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold more than 90 million records worldwide. Some of his best-known songs are "I Walk the Line", "Ring of Fire", "Get Rhythm", "Man in Black" and "A Boy Named Sue". Cash was also known for his activism - giving free prison converts and also drawing attention to issues that affected Native Americans.
Cash performed a duet in 1967 with June Carter who would go on to become his wife, and they would remain married until her death in May 2003.
Toward the end of his career he gained a new generation of fans by covering songs by contemporary rock artists of the time; most notably "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails, "Rusty Cage" by Soundgarden, and "Personal Jesus" by Depeche Mode.
The 2005 biopic Walk the Line was a dramatisation of Cash's music career, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Reece Witherspoon, and was a critical and commercial success. John Carter Cash, the son of Johnny and June, served as an executive producer.
