60th anniversary of the construction of the Berlin Wall
13th August 2021
Construction of the Berlin wall by the German Democratic Republic (GDR, East Germany), started on the 13th August 1961, cutting off West Berlin from virtually all of surrounding East Germany and East Berlin.
The barrier included guard towers placed along large concrete walls, accompanied by a wide area (later known as the "death strip") that contained anti-vehicle trenches, "fakir beds" and other defences.
The Eastern Bloc portrayed the Wall as protecting its population from fascist elements conspiring to prevent the "will of the people" in building a socialist state in East Germany.

85 years since the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin
1st August 2021
Nazi Germany used the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin for propaganda purposes; Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels exploited the Olympic festivities to advance the Nazi cause by portraying Germany as a strong and united nation under Hitler.
The success of American athletes such as Jesse Owens, however, undermined Hitler’s message of Aryan superiority. With his four gold medals, Jesse Owens was the star of the Berlin Olympics, breaking the world record in the 200-meter race and in the long jump.
