28 November: William Blake was born in 1757. The painter, poet and printmaker's work was unrecognised during his lifetime but he is now considered one of the most important figures of the Romantic age. Blake mentioned the ‘doors of perception' in his famous work, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell. The line influenced Aldous Huxley, whose book on psychedelic drug use was named The Doors of Perception, which in turn inspired the name of the rock group, the Doors. TAP THE IMAGE FOR MORE. 1 December 1822: Franz Liszt, Hungarian piano virtuoso, debuts at a concert in Vienna at age 11. He would go on to become an accomplished teacher, pianist, and composer. "Lisztomania" was a term coined by poet Heinrich Heine to describe the intense levels of emotion demonstrated by fans toward Liszt during his performances. At the time, the word 'mania' indicated a medical condition rather than a fashion or fad, and there were recommended measures to immunize the public against Lisztomania. (AKG140177. 2 December: Georges Seurat was born in 1859. The French post-Impressionist painter developed techniques known as chromoluminarism (the separation of colours into individual dots of patches) and pointillism (where small painted dots create an image). For many people, their first experience of Seurat was during Cameron's moment of introspection in a museum in the film Ferris Bueller's Day Off. (AKG7237804.
